Shawnee Community College to Expand its Truck Driving Program
As the demand for safe truck drivers grows around the country, so is the truck driving program at Shawnee Community College. On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at 9 a.m., officials from the College and the community will hold a ribbon-cutting and groundbreaking ceremony to expand the program, including CDL training, a new state-of-the-art simulator, classroom, and training range at the Metropolis Extension Center (5385 Industrial Park Dr, Metropolis, IL).
SCC Student Receives SIU Provost Scholarship
Commencement is right around the corner at Shawnee Community College, and one graduate will have something extra to celebrate this year. Jessica Cates will receive an Associate of Arts degree and an Associate of Science degree on May 13. Jessica received quite a surprise on Monday, May 2.

On Wednesday, March 16, 2022, Dr. Loren E. Klaus, 93, loving husband and father of three children, peacefully passed away at the home of his daughter, Marla Klaus Daniels, in Spring, Texas. Dr. Klaus was living at the time of his passing in The Woodlands, Texas, having recently moved with his wife, Norma, from Glen Carbon, Illinois.

SCC Truck Driving Program recognizes local business owner’s contribution
A local diesel mechanic and business owner, Mr. Larry Cheek, was recently recognized for his dedication to SCC student success. The Shawnee Community College Truck Driving Program Coordinator Kelly Jennings presented a plaque to Mr. Larry Cheek of Ullin, Illinois, for 35 years of dedicated service to the SCC Truck Driving Program students. Mr. Cheek is the owner of Cheeko's Truck Repair in Ullin and has provided for the service and maintenance of the program vehicles for over 35 years.

Building on a solid team of diverse experts in their fields, Governor JB Pritzker recently announced several appointments in his administration, including Mr. Craig Bradley, longtime Shawnee Community College instructor to the Community College Board. Mr. Craig Bradley has served on the Shawnee Community College faculty for nearly 30 years, teaching computers, astronomy, and electronics. Bradley is also the advisor of the Alpha Lambda Epsilon Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society at Shawnee Community College.

Today, the Saints Foundation announced that the nonprofit organization’s Executive Director, Gene Honn, retired August 31, 2021, starting a leadership transition process over the next month. "Shawnee Community College has benefitted from Gene’s expertise and collegial generosity. Shawnee Community College announces upcoming Covid-19 protocol forums
The President of Shawnee Community College, Dr. Timothy Taylor, announced today the College would be hosting a series of forums beginning today, September 1st at 2:00 p.m. The forums are aimed at discussing changes to the College's Covid-19 protocols. The recent Executive Order by Governor J.B. Pritzker requires all Illinois higher education institutions to implement mandatory vaccination and testing by September 5th.
SCC Releases 42nd episode of their Science in Seconds web series
The series features short videos starring long-time SCC Biology Instructor Tony Gerard and provides viewers with interesting facts about flora and fauna in the southern Illinois region. SCC Communications Director Rob Betts, who co-produces and edits the series, said, "When Tony & I came up with the idea to begin the series, it was just as Covid-19 was shutting things down in our region including in-person classes at SCC.
