A Message from Shawnee Community College President Dr. Tim Taylor and Board of Trustees Chairman Mr. Steve Heisner

I hope this message finds you in good spirits. I am reaching out to provide clarity and reassurance regarding a recent initiative from the Federal Office of Management & Budget (OMB), dated January 28, 2025, that temporarily pauses federal grant spending, which may potentially impact certain programs and services on our campus.

The OMB’s initial memorandum is part of a broader administrative review process. While some federal financial assistance programs are under evaluation, the pause explicitly excludes direct assistance to individuals and critical programs like Medicaid, food assistance, and Pell Grants.

Late Tuesday afternoon, a federal judge temporarily blocked the funding freeze until February 3, 2025. Additionally, earlier this Wednesday, the OMB released a communication stating it was rescinding the memo, although the Executive Orders perpetuating the freeze remain in place. We understand that this evolving situation may be confusing, and we appreciate your patience as we navigate these developments together.

Please rest assured that our students and employees are the heart of Shawnee College, and the Board and I are fully committed to safeguarding your well-being and success. We take immense pride in our resilience and ability to overcome challenges together.

While this is part of a broader federal process, I want to reaffirm that Shawnee College remains financially strong, with diverse funding sources, including tuition, local and state tax revenues, and state and federal grants. Thanks to prudent financial planning, including maintaining reserve funds for unforeseen circumstances, we continue to operate as usual, ensuring the Spring 2025 semester will proceed without interruption. Students will receive their earned Pell Grants and can stay focused on their academic and career goals. Faculty and staff will continue to receive the support they need to provide the high-quality education and services our community deserves.

As is widely known, community colleges play a pivotal role in advancing students’ academic and professional trajectories, serving as the foundation of workforce education and training. I am confident that Washington leadership recognizes and values our collective impact. While temporary directives and funding shifts may arise in the future, our Board and executive leadership remain unwavering in our commitment to our students and employees. We will continue to advocate, to the fullest extent allowed by law, for equity and inclusion – principles that empower us to serve our students and community effectively.

Thank you for your continued trust and support. As you can imagine, this situation is evolving rapidly, and we will keep you informed as more details emerge that may impact you. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to my office.

We are Shawnee College – a strong institution with dedicated faculty and staff, an outstanding student body, and a deeply supportive community. Rest assured, we will continue to fiercely advocate on behalf of our students, employees, and our mission in all public and private forums. Your success is our success, and together, we will continue to grow and thrive.
